Motherhood Calm & Chaos Explained | DC Motherhood Photographer

Two Sides of Motherhood

So, I know I have a few blog posts about my Motherhood Project – Calm & Chaos, but I really wanted to show you what I mean by calm and chaos and how I incorporate this into every session.

Motherhood is two things to me…calm and chaos.  Stemming from my own childhood – calm – (one of two girls) and my own motherhood – chaotic – (raising three boys).  Now I know this is somewhat stereotypical – girls can be the rowdiest one in the room and boys can be calm and quiet and that’s why my project was capturing the JOY in both.

But how can chaos be joyful? Oh, but it can!

Someday things in my house were so crazy that all I could do was laugh!  Those dance parties in the kitchen…JOY! More spaghetti sauce in the toddler’s hair than their tummy…JOY. All (and I mean ALL) the toy bins dumped on the playroom floor…ok, maybe not joy at first, but laughter at the mess a little one can make.

And then there’s the calm. Early morning snuggles, little hands playing with your hair, “snuggle noses” (our term for eskimo kisses), bedtime stories, oh, I could go on and on. Those little moments that tug at your heart and fill up your cup. So much JOY!

Real Feelings

“But motherhood isn’t all joy, Natasha!” I hear you!  I understand you and I have had ALL the hard moments, too.

The sleepless nights.

The anxiety and worry – are you doing this right? Did I breastfeed long enough? Did I wait too long to potty train? Is switching to a new preschool going to permanently impact my child’s life? I did this with my oldest and had this EXACT worry for a very long time! Spoiler alert: he graduated in the top of his class from high school, went on to get a BA in Business and has a fabulous job…no, the preschool switch didn’t scar him!

Did I yell too much today? Or did I let them get away with too much today? Did they watch too much tv or have too much screen time?

We can drive ourselves CRAZY with overthinking and worry, but in between all that there is joy. I promise. Sometimes you just need a little reminder. And that’s exactly what my sessions are…a reminder of all the goodness in your motherhood journey.

I want to continuously strive to capture all the joy – even if it’s chaotic and crazy.

Are you ready for your calm and chaos to be captured?
